City of Light, the new single from Stockholm-based synth duo Unify Separate, is a shimmering, melancholic electronic pop anthem that celebrates the bittersweet sense of freedom that can be felt by leaving the world and all its troubles behind, if only for a fleeting moment.

"In the city of light let's forget who we are, tonight. Make it all go away, it's okay to believe the lie," sighs singer Andrew Montgomery, while Leo Josefsson conjures up a gorgeous vintage synthpop backdrop, with emphatic verses and soaring choruses.

For Leo and Andrew, the City of Light is a subtle but significant update on the Unify Separate soundworld that they employed to such powerful effect on second album, 'Music Since Tomorrow'. It's a sign of the duo's continuing creative dynamism, as they begin work on their much-anticipated third album.

"I was involved in a serious car accident in 1993 when some friends and I were going up to Stockholm to see Depeche Mode (Devotional tour). Suddenly the driver of the car I was sitting in lost control at high speed and we drove off the road, overturned and finally ended up in the ditch. We must have had a guardian angel watching over us because no one was seriously injured. Something that has stuck with me since was that no one in the car said a word; we seemed to quietly accept our fate amidst the deafening screeching sound of metal against asphalt and the side of the road closing in at high speed. I lost consciousness for a couple of minutes and when I woke up people were already there with blankets and had called an ambulance. Since then I have had a feeling of and asked myself the question: Did it all really end there? Is everything since then just an illusion or simulation of what could have been? The event has made a big impression on me and has inspired "City of Light", says Leo.
